The history of traditional Guatemalan costumes is a rich blend of pre-Hispanic and colonial heritage. Although many costumes date back to ancient times, their current form and regional distinction were consolidated during the conquest.
Origins and Evolution:
Before the arrival of the Spanish, the Maya already wore clothing made from natural fibers. Upon colonizing, the Spanish allowed the indigenous people to keep their clothing, but assigned distinctive colors and designs to identify each social group or community. This resulted in the great diversity of clothing seen today, each with a unique signature that symbolizes the community's identity.
Meaning of the Garments:
Güipil: This is the most iconic garment for women. The word comes from Nahuatl and means "adorned blouse or dress." Its origin is pre-Hispanic and it is woven on a backstrap loom. The designs and colors have deep symbolism, representing the Mayan worldview, nature, and the history of the people. It can take several months to make, especially for special ceremonies such as weddings or funeral rites.
Corte: This is the long skirt that wraps around the waist and is held in place with a sash. It is generally more subdued in color than the güipil, but its weaves can also feature intricate designs.
Sash and Perraje: The sash is used to secure the skirt to the waist. The perraje, or shawl, is a versatile piece worn over the shoulders to carry babies, merchandise, or as a coat.
Regional diversity:
Costumes vary significantly from department to department and sometimes even from municipality to municipality. For example, in Quetzaltenango, güipiles are characterized by their embroidered flowers around the neck. In San Juan Chamelco, güipil designs can symbolize the sunrise and sunset. Meanwhile, in Chichicastenango, Mayan clothing is considered among the most expensive and elaborate.
