The Aurora Zoo has been in existence for over 100 years and is recognized as one of the 10 modern zoos in Latin America.

Its origins are linked to President José María Reina Barrios, who expropriated the extensive Finca La Aurora in 1892 with the idea of creating a large public garden, inspired by Parisian parks. Although his original project was never fully realized, this initiative laid the foundation for the future park.

The idea for the zoo materialized years later, officially inaugurated on December 25, 1924, during the administration of President José María Orellana. It was conceived as part of a large recreational area known as Reforma Park, which also included various museums and a racetrack. Colonel Herlindo Solórzano was its first administrator.

Since 1991, La Aurora Zoo has undergone a series of significant renovations and improvements, expanding its footprint and modernizing its facilities. It has evolved from a simple animal exhibit to a conservation, education, and animal welfare center.

Today, La Aurora Zoo is recognized as one of the best in Latin America, covering 16 landscaped blocks and housing more than 280 different species and approximately 2,500 animals. Its focus has shifted toward species conservation, environmental education, and animal welfare, participating in international programs and accreditations that guarantee compliance with high standards in wildlife management.

Recently, in 2024, the zoo celebrated its centennial, reaffirming its role as an important "lung" for the city and a vital space for the connection between people and wildlife.
